According to reports at Free Malaysia Today, Malaysia Airlines may well have reached a breaking point in its operations, as it struggles with severe shortages of aircraft and parts.
According to a Singapore-based aviation consultant Brendan Sobie, many airlines have been facing supply and manpower problems for years, but Malaysia Airlines appears to have been hit the hardest.
Sobie noted that Malaysia Airlines has struggled with poor on-time performance consistently over the past one to two years, and the recent operational disruptions point to deeper challenges in handling industry issues.
“All airlines are capable of managing their schedules appropriately, and clearly, something went wrong here because not every airline is facing the same problems as Malaysia Airlines," he said, emphasizing that it ultimately comes down to how an airline manages such issues.
Recently, the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia reduced Malaysia Airlines' air operator certificate validity from three years to just one year due to the airline's operational difficulties.
Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG), the parent company of Malaysia Airlines, revealed that it was scheduled to receive 17 new aircraft from manufacturers this year, but only four have been delivered so far.
MAG's managing director, Izham Ismail, attributed these operational challenges to global shortages of spare parts and delays in engine repairs and overhauls.
Additionally, MAG announced that it would be reducing flights and routes until December due to recent service disruptions that have affected Malaysia Airlines, Firefly, and Amal services.
